SCIDYNE® Conflict Minerals Policy
Background
Conflict Minerals are natural resources mined in areas where the proceeds have been linked to armed conflict and human rights abuses.
The most commonly referenced Conflict Minerals are:
- Tantalum: Extracted from the mineral columbite-tantalite, also known as coltan
- Tin: Derived from cassiterite
- Tungsten: Sourced from wolframite
- Gold
These minerals are sometimes referred to as 3TG, an acronym for Tantalum, Tin, Tungsten, and Gold. Their use is necessary for the production and functionality of many everyday items such as electronics, automobiles, and jewelry. For example; capacitors may use Tantalum, solder contains Tin, Tungsten is used to harden carbide tooling, and electrical connectors are often Gold plated.
Although these minerals can be found throughout the world, of particular concern are those mined and processed in the eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and in adjoining countries. In some cases, revenues generated from this geographic region may directly, or indirectly, finance or benefit armed groups engaged in civil war resulting in serious social and environmental abuses.
In response, the United States passed the Dodd-Frank Financial Reform and Consumer Protection Act in July of 2010. Section1502(b) requires US publicly traded manufacturers who file certain reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to disclose whether the products they manufacture, or contract to manufacture, contain “Conflict Minerals” and to disclose the chain of custody and usage regardless of where they are sourced, processed, or sold.
